On those, Premium ($24 a month on yearly billing) keeps generating after the monthly tokens run out. My Leonardo AI review has one exception: skip it if your output depends on Veo, Kling or GPT Image, which always cost tokens.

Free is good for learning prompts and weak for anything else. The 150 tokens reset every day, Quality settings stay on Basic, and Auto Only means you never choose the model that runs.
That last gate has a cost: judging one specific model, such as Lucid Origin, takes a paid month, and the cheapest is Essential at $12 on Pay Monthly.
Leonardo AI Pros and Cons
Leonardo’s strength is one subscription across 80+ models with relaxed generation on a fixed list of 15 image and 6 video models; its weak points are the Free plan’s public output and the narrow reach of “unlimited”.

Leonardo AI Features
Four features decide the purchase: image model choice, video, the editing tools and style training, each behind a plan gate or a model list.
Image generation: 80+ models behind one token balance
Paid plans open 80+ models, while Free is set to Auto Only. Leonardo’s own Lucid and Phoenix models sit beside third-party models such as GPT Image and Nano Banana, which run on external servers.
Every run on a token-metered model is charged in tokens by GPU load, and one token is not tied to an image size or action, so no plan converts its allowance into a fixed image count. How model families differ is covered in generative AI explained.
For a marketer making client product shots on Premium, the token-saving split is simple: draft on Lucid Realism or Phoenix, which keep running in relaxed mode, and save GPT Image for the final few.
Video generation: a long model list, metered by model
Leonardo makes video from a text prompt or a still image, with start and end frames to anchor a shot. Video costs more tokens than images because each clip needs far more GPU power.
Only six video models stay unlimited once tokens run out, and only on Ultimate and the team plans: Motion 2.0 and its Fast version, Wan 2.6, Hailuo 2.3 and its Fast version, and MiniMax H3 at 480p.
That list shapes the buyer. A creator who storyboards in Motion 2.0 or Wan 2.6 gets volume on Ultimate; a creator who needs Veo 3.1 for finished clips pays tokens for every render, whatever the plan.
Editing, upscaling and background removal
Leonardo keeps clean-up in the same account: an Image Editor, a Video Editor, an Image Upscaler and a Background Remover sit beside the generators. Upscaling and background removal draw on the same token balance, so an upscale-heavy month burns the allowance faster than the headline suggests.
When editing rather than generating is the main job, AI photo editors built around editing are the better shortlist.
Training your own style or character
Paid plans train personal AI models: 10 on Essential, 20 on Premium and 50 on Ultimate. A model learns from a small uploaded set, typically 10 to 20 images, and recreates a style, theme or subject.
That is how a brand keeps one character or look steady across a campaign. On the team plans, training on shared team tokens carries a check mark only on Growth. Keep the training images in your own storage, so the style can be rebuilt if you leave.
Leonardo AI Ease of Use for Beginners
Free sets Model Access to Auto Only, so a beginner has no model to choose. The same Auto Only setting is what stops a Free user from learning which model suits their work.
Presets come with every Solo plan, Free included, while Quality settings move from Basic on Free to Enhanced on paid plans.
On a paid plan, I would pick two or three of the 80+ models and write prompts that repeat. On a token meter, prompt engineering basics save money as well as time.

Is Leonardo AI Unlimited?
Only partly. After the monthly tokens run out, Premium keeps generating images, and Ultimate and the team plans keep generating images and video, but only on 15 image and 6 video models and at lower priority.
Third-party models such as Veo, Kling and GPT Image, and Flow State, cost tokens every time.

Relaxed jobs wait behind the priority queue with fewer concurrent generations, and no wait time is published, so deadline work belongs on Fast Tokens, even on Ultimate.

The first upgrade is about rights, not volume, which is why I would not run client work on Free even at low volume. Each later upgrade has one trigger:

Premium on Pay Yearly costs $24 x 12 = $288 a year, against $30 x 12 = $360 on Pay Monthly. Take the $360 – $288 = $72 saving once Leonardo is your main image tool, not in the first month.
Three creators show where the team plan pays. Team Starter costs $24 x 3 = $72 a month, while three Premium accounts on Pay Monthly cost $30 x 3 = $90 a month.
On Pay Yearly, three Premium accounts cost $24 x 3 = $72, the same as Starter, so there Starter wins on relaxed video and one shared pool, with the same 25,000 tokens per person.
The plan price leaves out tax, which is added at payment, and Token Top-up packs, whose sizes and prices the page does not list. Top-ups never expire but work only while you stay subscribed.

A paid plan buys private output, which raises the next question: is that enough for client work?
Is Leonardo AI Safe for Client Work?
Yes, on a paid plan with creations set to private: you own what you make, and Leonardo may use private content only to run the service. On Free, creations are public and Leonardo owns them.

The trap sits on paid plans too: anything left public carries the same perpetual, irrevocable licence, so set creations to private before the first client generation.
Ownership is not exclusivity either. The terms state that outputs may not be unique and another user may receive a similar one, so a contract promising a one-of-a-kind image needs its own wording.
Leonardo states that it is SOC 2 Type I and Type II accredited; a procurement team should ask for the report. Whether AI output is protected by copyright where you work is a legal question the terms do not settle.
The terms also let Leonardo delete an account after 12 months or more of inactivity, with its content, so keep your own copies of delivered work.
Leonardo AI for Teams and Developers
The pricing page’s team view prices Team Starter at $72 a month for 3 seats, with one shared token pool, private team generations and relaxed video. The API is a separate Pay-As-You-Go product with its own balance.
Starter shares 75,000 tokens across those 3 seats, with a 225,000-token bank. Growth costs $48 x 3 = $144 a month for 180,000 shared tokens, a 540,000-token bank and training on team tokens. Both run 6 simultaneous generations with a queue of 20.
I would start a small team on Starter and move to Growth only when someone needs to train a house style on team tokens. Anything beyond Growth is a Custom plan priced by Leonardo’s sales team.
The API runs on Pay-As-You-Go with no monthly fee: you load credit in the API Access tab, the balance does not expire, and auto top-ups refill it at a threshold you set. Leonardo’s API docs, read in October 2026, describe a move from subscription plans to this model.

Who Should Use Leonardo AI, and Who Should Skip It?
Leonardo fits creators and small teams whose output runs on the image models in Leonardo’s relaxed list and who need private results. It fails buyers who rely on third-party models for volume, want generation on their own hardware, or must stay on Free.

Leonardo’s difference is breadth on one token balance: 80+ models, video and model training, plus a separate API. Midjourney is the closest rival on price, and the split between them is privacy.

At $24 a month on yearly billing, Leonardo Premium and Midjourney Standard cost the same, and both keep images coming in a relaxed mode. The gap is privacy: Midjourney’s Stealth Mode starts on Pro at $48 a month billed annually, while Leonardo Essential is private at $10.
For client work, the cheapest private plan on each side is Leonardo Essential at $10 and Midjourney Pro at $48, a $48 – $10 = $38 monthly difference. Pick Canva AI when the job is design layouts inside Canva’s templates and editor, with AI use drawn from a shared allowance; my Canva AI review covers its AI tools.

How I Evaluated Leonardo AI
I read Leonardo’s US pricing page in both its Pay Monthly and Pay Yearly views, with its FAQ, in October 2026. In the same month I read its terms of service, its AI video generator page and its API documentation.
Prices, limits and ownership terms come from those pages; the cost math, upgrade triggers and plan-fit calls are my analysis. The competitor rows come from each rival’s own pricing page, read the same month.
The pricing page lists no token cost per image or video, no Token Top-up pack prices and no Custom plan prices, and no relaxed-mode wait time is published.
Output quality depends on your own prompts, so run your two main prompts through Free, or one Essential month at $12 if you need to pick the model, before committing to a year.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Leonardo AI subscription tokens pay for the API?
No. The API bills from its own Pay-As-You-Go balance, loaded in the API Access tab, with no monthly fee. The pricing page lists the API beside the Solo and Team plans as a separate product, and a cancelled API subscription converts its remaining credits into a balance that does not expire.
Can I cancel or change my Leonardo AI plan anytime?
Yes. An upgrade applies immediately and charges the pro-rata difference, while a downgrade starts with the next billing cycle.
A cancellation takes effect at the end of the current subscription period, so the plan stays paid until then. The terms also allow a pause of up to 3 months per subscription period.
